Best TV and console settings to set before GTA 6

A few minutes in your TV and console menus will do more for how GTA 6 looks and feels than any in-game slider. Set these before launch so your first night in the city looks right.
Turn on Game Mode
Game Mode switches off most of the TV's picture processing, which cuts input lag so aiming and driving feel immediate. Many TVs can switch to it automatically when a console is detected (often called ALLM).
Calibrate HDR on your console
Both consoles include an HDR calibration tool. On PS5 it lives in Screen and Video settings as Adjust HDR, and on Xbox it is the HDR Game Calibration app. Run it once on the TV you actually play on, following the on-screen steps.
Night scenes are where bad HDR shows first: crushed shadows or a grey haze. Calibrating now means darker scenes keep their detail.
Switch off motion smoothing and sharpening
Motion smoothing adds lag and artifacts in games. Turn it off, and set sharpness to zero or the TV's neutral value so edges do not shimmer.
Should you enable 120Hz and VRR?
Enable 120Hz output and Variable Refresh Rate if your TV and the HDMI port you are using support them. Rockstar has not detailed GTA 6's performance modes yet, so this page will update with recommendations once the game is out.
Set up your audio
Headphones with your console's 3D audio turned on make traffic, gunfire and police sirens much easier to place. On a soundbar or receiver, check that the console's audio output matches what your system supports.
Questions
Should I play GTA 6 in performance or quality mode?
Rockstar has not announced GTA 6's graphics modes yet. This dispatch will be updated with a recommendation after launch.
Do I need a 4K TV for GTA 6?
No. GTA 6 will run on any TV your console supports, but a 4K HDR TV with Game Mode gives the best picture.
